Greater Baltimore Learning Center / A few answers

About the
Learning Center.

What ages and programs are planned?

Our mission is to nurture each child's unique potential, build foundational character, and strengthen their families. The Learning Center will begin with pre-K readiness for ages 2–5. Plans also include life-skills classes for parents and children, and summer learning and enrichment for grades K–8. The pre-K readiness program includes a Maryland-aligned curriculum, character education, a full-time nurse, and tuition within Maryland’s Child Care Scholarship range.

Where will the Learning Center be?

The Learning Center will be located on the campus of the Greater Baltimore Church at 5801 Security Blvd, Gwynn Oak, MD 21207. The capital campaign will help prepare the campus to welcome the next generation.

Do we need to belong to the church to enroll?

No. The Learning Center is rooted in the Christian faith and the values of Greater Baltimore Church, including service and love. However, we welcome children and families regardless of faith or lack of faith, race, color, or background. Church membership is not required to enroll.

Which images show the actual campus?

The opening image shows one possible learning space within the planned Learning Center, followed immediately by an actual photo of a current classroom. The classroom and hallway photos in the campus section also show the existing space. The outdoor views are Google Earth captures supplied by the church. The images under 01, 02, and 03 are AI-generated illustrations of the planned experiences.

The future concepts beneath the campus story show a modern classroom for pre-K readiness, summer camp with learning activities and outdoor fun, and a proposed playground beside a current view of that area. They were generated using the existing classroom and outdoor views as references. Final designs may differ.

How will the mission grow?

We’re beginning with children ages 5-14 and their families. Long term, we’re considering other programs that help every person reach their unique potential, rooted in values and providing premiere services to those that need it the most. Those future programs are a vision, not a current service offering.

How are the Learning Center and campaign connected?

Greater Baltimore Learning Center is the name of the planned organization. Greater Impact Learning Center Campaign is the fundraising campaign led by Greater Baltimore Church to help open the Center.

Who is behind the Learning Center?

The Greater Baltimore Church, a non-denominational Christian congregation in Gwynn Oak/Woodlawn, Baltimore County, MD is starting the Learning Center as a separate nonprofit.

The new executive director brings 28 years as a New York City teacher and assistant principal, two master’s degrees, and a New York State administrator license that transfers to Maryland.

What does the kindergarten-readiness comparison show?

In Baltimore County’s 2023–24 assessment, 45% of children with any formal prior care demonstrated kindergarten readiness, compared with 19% of children whose prior care was at home or informal. Formal care includes full- or half-day programs; the home/informal category covers full-day care. Prior care was reported by parents. The formal-care category is broader than public pre-K alone.

These figures show an association, not proof that the care setting caused the difference, and do not predict individual children’s outcomes. Source: Maryland State Department of Education, Readiness Matters, 2023–24, Baltimore County profile, printed p. 15 (PDF page 16).

Where do the local need figures come from?

The chart is Greater Baltimore Church’s planning estimate for zip code 21207, where our campus is located. It compares approximately 1,275 children estimated to use center-based care with 944 licensed seats open to children under 5. The estimated difference is about 330 places; estimated demand is about 35% above capacity. It is not a count of children on waiting lists or available vacancies.

The church supplied these inputs: 3,272 children under 5 (1,858 under 3 and 1,414 ages 3–4), from the Census ACS 2019–2023 table B09001; a 67% all-parents-working share based on table B23008; and a 58% center-use planning assumption. B23008 covers children under 6, so applying that share to the under-5 population is an approximation. These inputs yield approximately 1,270 children, presented as roughly 1,275 in the church’s planning estimate.

The church’s review of ChildCareCenter.us listings counted 974 licensed places across 26 programs and excluded 30 school-age-only places, leaving 944. This is the church’s supplied review, not a live count of open seats. The local estimate includes children under 5; our planned pre-K readiness program will serve ages 2–5.

When will it open?

We plan to welcome our first class of summer school scholars in June 2027, followed by our inaugural Pre-K class in September 2027 (subject to Maryland State Department of Education approval).

Can I enroll my child?

What will my gift help fund?

The Greater Impact Learning Center Campaign is Greater Baltimore Church’s $1 million capital campaign over two years, providing seed funding to open the Greater Baltimore Learning Center. The church is raising seed money on behalf of the Learning Center to make opening possible. Gifts fund the initial investment in preparing our building, creating a playground, and providing learning equipment, creating a modern setting where students can succeed.

How will you keep tuition affordable and the center self-sustaining?

Tuition will be set within Maryland’s Child Care Scholarship range. The center is designed to be self-sustaining in its ongoing operations while keeping tuition affordable. The capital campaign provides seed funding for opening, distinct from ongoing operating support.
